How to get your website cited in AI search answers
Answer engines quote only a few sources per answer. Here is how to make your pages easy to fetch, understand and cite, without tricks.
GET CITEDIn AI search answersMore buyers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Google's AI Overviews before they visit a single website. Each answer cites only a few sources. Being one of them has little to do with tricks. It comes down to making your pages easy to fetch, easy to understand and easy to quote.
1. Let the right crawlers in
AI search tools use their own crawlers, separate from the bots that collect training data. Check your robots.txt, and also your firewall or CDN bot settings: a rule that blocks unknown bots often blocks these as well.

Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xmlBlocking GPTBot, OpenAI's training crawler, does not remove you from ChatGPT search; OAI-SearchBot is the one that matters there. Google's AI Overviews are built on the normal Googlebot index, so a page that can appear in Google Search with a snippet is already eligible.
2. Make sure Bing knows your site
Bing's index powers Microsoft Copilot and is one of the sources behind ChatGPT search, yet many sites have never been added to Bing Webmaster Tools. Verify the site there, submit your sitemap, and turn on IndexNow so new and updated pages are announced the moment you publish them.
3. Put the answer in the first two sentences
Answer engines lift passages, not whole pages. A section that opens with a direct, self-contained answer gets quoted. A section that warms up for three paragraphs gets skipped. Write each heading as the question a buyer would ask, answer it straight away, then add the detail.
- Use the buyer's words in headings: “How long does a Webflow migration take?” beats “Our timeline”.
- Keep key facts in real text, not baked into images or loaded only after a click.
- Give numbers you can stand behind, with the unit and the context.
4. Be the same business everywhere
AI systems cross-check who you are. Use the same business name, description, founder and services on your website, LinkedIn, directories and profiles, and connect them with Organization schema and sameAs links. Old descriptions and mismatched names make it harder for a model to be sure it has the right business.
5. Publish things worth citing
Original checklists, honest comparisons, price ranges, process explanations and real case studies are the pages that get cited. Rewritten generic advice rarely is, because the engines already have a hundred copies of it.
What about llms.txt?
An llms.txt file is a short markdown map of your site for language models. It is cheap to add and some tools read it, but Google has said it does not use it for Search. Treat it as a small bonus, not a strategy.
