Design gets the client excited. Structure keeps them happy.
What building eight John Deere dealer websites taught us about the part of a website nobody sees in the design review.
STRUCTURE LASTSNotes from a dealer buildOn launch day, everyone talks about the design. A year later, the only thing anyone talks about is whether the site is easy to keep up to date. Our John Deere dealer work made that very clear.
The problem with beautiful pages
Equipment dealers change their inventory, promotions and opening hours every week. A site that looks perfect but needs a developer for every change becomes a site nobody updates.
What we built instead
We built one Webflow system for eight dealers. Every location, equipment category, promotion and featured machine lives in the CMS, so one page template powers every location page and the dealer team edits hours and phone numbers themselves.
Three rules we now follow on every build
Anything that changes more than once a quarter belongs in the CMS. Every repeated section is a component, not a copy. And interactions stay light, so the site stays fast as the content grows.
The question to ask before you approve a design
Ask who will update each section, how often, and how. If the answer is "a developer, every week", the design is not finished yet.
